A Sound Sense Gathering with Ben Oliver and Chi Ying Lam, exploring composition and conducting through sound-making, drawing and puppetry Pythagoras’ Workshops Toolkit is a free digital music resource aimed at teachers and community music leaders who work with children of primary school age. The toolkit emerged as an education extension of Pythagoras’ Toolkit, a playful, wordless music-puppetry theatre piece for family audiences. 

Developed by puppetry director Rachel Warr, composer/conductor Benjamin Oliver and music educator and researcher Chi Ying Lam, the interdisciplinary toolkit explores graphic scores and conducting, through music, sound-making, drawing and puppetry. The resource is flexible and adaptable, and includes a downloadable guide, 31 project tutorial videos hosted on YouTube and sheet music resources. In this Sound Sense Gathering, two of the co-creators, Ben Oliver and Chi Ying Lam, will introduce some of the interdisciplinary elements of the toolkit and explore how the activities might create opportunities for developing (musical) agency, participation and resilience. 

The Gathering will begin at 7pm and run for around one hour. Afterwards, we'll keep the Zoom room open until 8.30pm for anyone who'd like to stay and chat, connect with colleagues, or continue the conversation informally.
