Drawing on responses from nearly 10,000 children, parents and teachers, the study shows that early access to inclusive music-making helps pupils build confidence, develop key social skills and form a lasting enthusiasm for music.Their approach prioritises child-centred and pressure free learning environments that help deepen children’s sense of belonging at school. Among the headline findings, 9 in 10 Rocksteady pupils say they want to continue music in secondary school, and 81% report that the lessons make their overall school experience better. The research also shows particularly “strong outcomes for children with SEND, with excitement for school rising from 34% to 96% on Rocksteady lesson days.”Rocksteady, sponsors of the Youth Music Awards, deliver their band‑based programme in thousands of primary schools nationwide, enabling children to learn instruments, rehearse as a band and perform. Rocksteady’s research is a reminder of how important it is for children to access inclusive music-making in education. Having a space to come together and make music with others, feeling ownership, in a relaxed environment, can change the way they feel about school. That experience is vital in today’s highly pressurised school environment. Carol Reid Youth Music Interim Co-CEO Read more about Rocksteady Music School newest research
