Image Winner: English Teacher Leeds-based four-piece English Teacher have emerged as one of the UK’s most vital new bands in recent years, blending sharp sociopolitical lyricism with genre-defying soundscapes. Formed at Leeds Conservatoire and honed at Youth Music funded projects, Music:Local and Come Play With Me, the Mercury Prize-winning group - formed of Lily Fontaine, Lewis Whiting, Nicholas Eden, and Douglas Frost - have built a loyal following through their fearless experimentation and regional pride. Their debut album This Could Be Texas showcases their dynamic range, from soaring ballads to off-kilter indie rock, all anchored by Fontaine’s evocative storytelling. Having won the Rising Star Award (Artist) at the Youth Music Awards 2022, the band have gone on to achieve great things, embodying the spirit of DIY artistry and community-driven growth. Their rise from local stages to national acclaim makes them true grassroots heroes. Image Youth Music were there for me at a time when I was struggling to find a way to keep pushing towards a career in music. Through financing vital regional support networks like Come Play With Me and Music: Leeds, and through personally hiring me to explore my interest in music journalism, to giving us the rising star award in 2022, I’m really grateful to them for being such an important part of my personal and the band’s evolution.
