Lewisham Music are looking to recruit new music tutors to join our team with the passion to inspire young people with a love of learning and making music.

We are currently looking for:

WOODWIND TUTOR

Primary School post
Small group teaching across flute, clarinet and saxophone on Tuesday afternoons (2 hours) with the possibility of leading a mixed ensemble (1 hour).

Saturday Centre post
1:1 woodwind tuition and one hour of wind band ensemble (4.5hours).

Primary School post
Monday afternoon or Wednesday morning for flute (1.5-2 hours).

VIOLIN TUTOR

Primary School post
Small group violin teaching on Tuesdays (4 hours).

VOCAL TUTOR

Primary School post
Vocal tutor to lead a choir on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday (1 hour).

Primary School post
Vocal tutor to lead a choir on Tuesdays (2 hours).

Secondary School post
Small group vocal tuition (day/hours TBC).

BRASS TUTOR

Saturday Centre post
1:1 brass tuition and two 30-minute group music theory sessions (4.5 hours).

CURRICULUM TUTOR

Primary School post
Half day teaching 4 classes across Key Stages, taking choir and singing assembly.

We're looking for musicians/educators who are specialists in the above skills who are eager to utilise this knowledge in the education of young people in both school and community settings.

You will also have the opportunity to work in collaboration with a range of partner organisations.

Pay

Teaching pay rate starts from £33.81 (inc. holiday pay) per hour, depending on qualifications and type of teaching.

Please note that pay rates are reviewed every September.

Interview/audition date

Interviews will be held between Wednesday 24 – Friday 26 June (depending on number of candidates) in-person. The venue for the interview will be confirmed upon being invited to an interview.

Job Requirements

  • Experience of learning, creating, and performing music and/or facilitating music education
  • Understanding of the: benefits of different ways of learning music; barriers that young people may face to making music; how learning music supports personal and social development; what motivates young people to learn
  • Experience rising to a challenge
  • An interest in a child-centred learning experience which values and responds to the needs and interests of individuals, within and beyond your musical specialism
  • A high level of proficiency in your area of specialism
  • Ability to: plan and deliver high-quality learning to engage and progress a wide range of pupils, musically, personally, and socially; create a safe learning environment, and to communicate effectively; plan activities for a wide range of young people
  • Strategies for managing learning in groups; creating learning that offers a level of challenge and independence appropriate to age/ability/capacity/context

Job Responsibilities

• Teach a range of progressive music skills enabling a young person to learn in an enjoyable way
• Deliver high-quality music tuition
• Lead and direct musical ensembles/groups as required, preparing suitable material, and supporting performance or recording opportunities
• Work as part of a team and foster positive relationships
• Communicate with other professionals about pupils' learning needs, and to identify and remove barriers
• Regularly reflect on and develop your own professional practice
• Prepare pupils for informal or formal exams or accreditations
• Observe all Lewisham Music policies; to promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young people, with a mandatory responsibility to report any identified concerns to the relevant professional
• Support the strategic aims of Lewisham Music, advocate for the power of music education and the work of Lewisham Music
• Support Lewisham Music's equal opportunities, cultural diversity, inclusion, and social justice objectives
