Race Night raises funds for Youth Music

Posted: 22 October 2012

Lauren Bayford and friends raised over £1,000 at an event in memory of her brother Dan. “He would be really proud to know he is supporting Youth Music and contributing to helping young people.”

Lauren says:

Since we lost Dan, it is his friends that have helped us to get through our day-to-day lives, and they have played a major role in supporting our family during the last seven years. The boys asked us to find a charity that we, as a family, wanted to support in memory of Dan.

A passion for music

“After thinking hard and doing lots of research, it was Youth Music that captured our attention and reflected a passion that we always saw in Dan. We wanted a positive, inspirational charity that we could talk about with smiles on our faces.

“My brother’s friends played a major part in organising a Race Night: an event where you show films of horse races, and ask people to bet on the result for charity.

"Tim Harbord set up a Facebook page and got all the bits and pieces for the Race Night itself. He deserves a big thank you, along with Richard Thornton who was the commentator for the evening.

Doing it for Dan

“My mum and I did a raffle and made cakes and sweets (which in itself raised £300). I am grateful to local businesses and friends who donated prizes.

"The races were such good fun. As the evening went on, the bets were getting bigger and the cheers louder. For the last race, we ‘auctioned’ the horses before they raced. One horse - 'Doing it for Dan' - went for £240!

“We were overwhelmed to have raised over £1,000. People were so generous and the Race Night was a great way to raise money for Youth Music.

“Dan had an affinity with those younger than him and used to love sharing his music with them; he has a special place in many of their hearts today.

"With his decks and his crew the ‘Gifted Misfits' they made music for fun, creating beats and lyrics that were way beyond their years.

"When Dan died it felt to us like the day the music had really died. But no, that is not what Dan would want and today his legacy has pulled us through.”
