REMIX Music Industry Seminar attracts Brit nominee
Urban music star and current Brit Award nominee Kano visits Bristol to advise to local young music-makers
REMIX, the Bristol Youth Music Action Zone, is proud to host the third Music Industry Seminar in Bristol for young people interested in the urban music industry.
The exclusive event will be held on Saturday January 28 at Bristol's Colston Hall Bar with special guests including Kano, who will give advice and feedback to young people about the urban music industry. After the seminar Kano and Outrageous will perform alongside young Bristol musicians from the REMIX projects and the winners of the FLAVA 2005 talent contest at a separate evening event.
The seminar will involve a panel where young people will get the chance to ask the stars and industry leaders questions they've always wanted to. This will be followed by small group discussions for more personal face-to-face discussion of particular topics.
There will also be a ‘demo panel’ giving young musicians the unique opportunity to play their demos to the experts and gain feedback and advice on how to tweak their skills for the industry.
Mijanou Blech, Director of REMIX, the Bristol Youth Music Action Zone said: “We’re really excited to have such respected and successful role models from the urban music scene coming to share their experiences with young people in Bristol.”

Notes to Editors:
1. REMIX, the Bristol Youth Music Action Zone was set up in 2002, to provide a wide range of music-making opportunities for under 18s. REMIX is based at Bristol's largest concert hall, Colston Hall, and forms part of their commitment to use music as a medium to empower and inspire local youth via education and outreach work within the venue and throughout the city. Thanks to a grant from Youth Music www.youthmusic.org.uk, REMIX has established more than 20 music workshops across the city and has successfully helped hundreds of young people from Bristol’s diverse communities to discover and develop their musical interest and skills.
The projects are keen to support under a new generation of talent in, particularly those who may
have had limited access to music-making in the past. More information is available at www.remixmusic.org.uk
2. Youth Music funds and facilitates music-making for young people up to the age of 18, particularly those living in areas of social and economic need. By 2010, Youth Music aims to have reached 3 million children and young people in a nation-wide strategy to support youth music-making. Since December 2000, Youth Music has set up 24 Action Zones in areas of social and economic need across England and Wales. The aim is to provide music-making activities to young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity. The Zones are made up of established organisations from the public, voluntary and private sector. They cover all genres of music and deliver a wide range of activities including workshops, rehearsals, performances, one-to-one teaching and mentoring.
3. Kevin Le Gendre is a journalist and broadcaster with a special interest in black music. Deputy Editor of Echoes, he contributes to a wide range of publications that include Jazzwise, MusicWeek, Vibrations and The Independent On Sunday and also appears as a commentator and critic on radio programmes such as BBC Radio 3's Jazz On 3 and BBC Radio 4's Front Row. Kevin also presented Now's The Time, a weekly two hour jazz programme on BBC London between September 2000 and November 2002. The ethos of the show was to reflect contemporary improvised music in its entirety and this inclusive, ecumenical approach to jazz - thinking beyond categories - has also been a decisive rule of thumb in Kevin's work in the media to date. Prior to moving to London in 1996, Kevin worked as a producer in the language unit of the Open University production centre where he devised audio material for French courses.
4. Kano, a member of East London’s N.A.S.T.Y. Crew, has risen from the underground to the mainstream with his most recent single ‘Typical Me’. After working his way up the ranks of east London's garage world for four years, Kano, 19, has emerged as one of the most distinctive voices and most talented homegrown rappers yet. London's garage scene, and its spin-off grime, may still be in their infancy compared to US hip-hop - but with a style true to his roots yet influenced by his idols from across the Atlantic, Kano could be one of the first to bridge the gap. His talents are apparent and his name hot on the lips of urban DJs as the ‘Crown Prince of Grime’ revered by urban music lovers, young and old. Now signed to the same label as The Streets, 697, Kano won the Mobo ‘Best Newcomer in 2005’ award and was nominated for many others.
5. Ian Penman - An expert in the field of digital music law who has also experienced being a professional musician and record producer, artist management and music publishing. Ian was previously an Associate at a top 10 city firm, where he spent over 7 years advising clients – primarily in Media and Entertainment law – often focusing on the New Media sector involving the Internet and e-commerce. Ian's clients range from Sony Computer Entertainment (PlayStation) to Windswept Music and include record companies, music publishers, artist managers, television producers (and broadcasters), film production companies, artists and musicians, magazine and book publishers, software developers, domain name registrars, ISP's and Website programmers together with general commercial companies. Prior to entering the law profession, Ian was in the music industry for 10 years – initially as a professional musician and record producer, and latterly in artist management and music publishing. Ian regularly speaks at conferences focusing on Media and Entertainment – and has chaired the Euroforum seminar on the Digital Distribution of Music - since its inception in 1999. In 2000, Ian was a member of the ICANN Working Group, which advised the ICANN board on its strategy for the introduction of new global domain names. He holds an LLB from The University of London, as well as a Masters in Law (specialising in Internet and Multimedia Rights) from the University of Westminster, where he was up until recently a visiting Principal Lecturer - and has written their Entertainment & Media and e-commerce course for the LPC.
6. Jason Price - A DJ and rapper who has built a career in promotion, artist management and running his own studios in London. Ice PR Ltd and the Funky Bunker Studios are the summation of a life hooked on music for JP. With a passion and energy that's infectious, Jason's music collection varies from Al Green, Curtis Mayfield, Boom Town Rats, Talking Heads and Blondie, Junior English, Nicky Thomas and to the 'toasting' styles of U-Roy, Big Youth and Yellow Man. The natural progression for Jason was to start DJing and rapping which sparked a knack for promotions. A successful run of club nights ensued. After a stint at Lloyds Register of Shipping, J decided to pursue his music career full time and chance meeting with Tim Russell in 1993 marked the beginning of a meeting of minds. With Tim as his musical mentor J continued DJing and promoting club nights and landing a weekly residency at Divine FM. By 2001 Jason had become disillusioned with the state of the quality, enthusiasm and passion that once had been the pride and backbone driving the music business. After many a consultation with Tim, the pair launched Ice PR Ltd with a vision of creating a professional yet organic environment for quality talent to evolve and succeed.
7. Outrageous - Nashon Prince (AKA Outrageous) did a BTEC National Diploma in music for two years. He reached a point in his life where he had a marketable product and felt that it was time to hit the big time. He set up his own label called ‘Outrageously Lovelii! Productions.’ He also has his own artists that are currently working on their Album Debuts. He has recently worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. Recently he produced the smash hit ‘Ride With Me’ by Dean Anthoni which is now number 13 in the R&B charts. Nashon also produced a remix of Old Skool by Noel McCoy, who had a hit called Family in the late eighties early nineties. He has worked alongside JD, of So Solid, who had a smash hit ‘Its All Over’ featuring Lisa Maffia and also produced for 2G who had hits with tracks called ‘Ball Out’ and ‘Tell Dem’ featuring Megga Man (So Solid). He has produced alongside Sunil Kalyan, who was the producer for many artists including Punjabi Hit Squad, Ashanti, Jay Z, Busta Rhymes, he has worked with Eminem and Mariah Carey, and had a smash hit with Punjabi MC. Nashon is also featured on Sunil Kalyan’s recent Album called ‘Da Product’ which is currently available. Sunil Kalyan’s new single ‘Don’t Stop’ features Cheshire Cat and Corrisse.
8. Tony Briscoe - Born and raised in London, Tony emerged into the music scene whilst in Southampton, developing and producing the artist Craig David (later co-writing Re Re-wind with Craig and Mark Hill). Later Tony concentrated on writing and producing the Aaron Soul album for UK Def Jam/Def Soul, co-writing the top 20 single ‘Ring Ring Ring’ which also featured on the film and platinum selling soundtrack Bridget Jones' Diary.Other projects have included works for Jamelia, South African R&B star Loyiso Bala and Def Jam/Def Soul artist Musiq Soulchild. Tony has also worked with Beverley Knight co-producing her first top-ten hit ‘Shoulda Woulda Coulda’ and producing ‘Whatever Clever’ on her album. More recently Tony has joined forces with Pete Devereux of the Artful Dodger to form an exciting new production team.

The FLAVA 2005 talent contest - Following several successful talent showcases in St. Pauls, (FLAVA, Journey of the MC), the Fast Forward Youth Arts Project have teamed up with REMIX to offer young people the chance to perform with national artist Kano. Lionface, GI and JINXSTA were amongst the winners of the FLAVA 2005 talent contest, and will be performing with young people from across the city through REMIX and other projects.
