April 2005
The event at Glasgow’s Barrowlands and the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall brought together those involved in music-making with
children and young people in Scotland. With some of the most influential people in Scottish music education leading a series
of presentations and workshop sessions, the conference seeks to explore some of the ways and partnerships which will take
Scotland’s music education forward.
The first day was aimed at anyone involved in working with young people who like Rock or Pop music. It was an opportunity
to network with like-minded individuals and educators and discuss why Rock and Pop music is important in education.
The second day explored pre-5s music provision and, among other topics, looked at how music-making can aid a child’s development.
The Rock and Pop day (May 17) was supported by an evening concert at famous music venue, Barrowlands. Some of the hottest
young rock & roll stars of the future showcased their talents at the event. As well as showing off their individual styles,
the bands made a point for all young people in Scotland - ROCK & POP MUSIC MATTERS!
‘From Nappies to Napster' was organised by charity Youth Music UK, which facilitates high quality and diverse music-making
projects for young people up to the age of 18.
Nod Knowles, Head of Music, Scottish Arts Council welcomed the conference and added: ‘This conference promises to be very
informative for all of those involved in youth music provision. Youth Music (UK) have proved themselves to be tireless champions
for young people’s music-making and we are delighted to have them as partners in Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative.’
Christina Coker, Chief Executive of Youth Music UK added, “We are delighted to be working together with the Scottish Arts
Council as part of the Youth Music Initiative in Scotland. We see this conference as an ideal opportunity to take forward
the initiative - bringing together those involved in inspiring children and young people’s interest in music to enable more
opportunities for music-making in Scotland in the future.”

Youth Music UK Editor's Notes
1. Youth Music UK was set up in 1999, it funds and facilitates high quality and diverse music-making projects for young
people up to the age of 18, particularly those living in areas of social and economic need. In its first five years Youth
Music UK reached nearly 1 million young people and by 2010 it aims to have reached more that 3 million children and young
people in a UK-wide strategy to support youth music-making. More information is available at www.youthmusic.org.uk
2. Since 1999 Youth Music UK has funded 28 music-making programmes in Scotland totalling £400,000. In 2002 together with
the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) and the Musicians Union (MU), Youth Music UK supported the publication of an audit of music-making
opportunities for children and young people in Scotland – What’s Going On? The audit found that although many diverse music-making
opportunities for children and young people in Scotland existed, there were gaps in provision and many barriers that stopped
children and young people taking part.

3. At the time of the publication of What’s Going On? The Scottish Executive announced a further £17.5m to go towards Young
People’s music-making in Scotland, with a further £20m being guaranteed in the November 2004 spending review. This money has
been pledged to what is now known as the Youth Music Initiative (YMI), which is administrated by the SAC. The initiative
is driven by the Scottish Executives central objective to guarantee 1 year’s music tuition to all children by the time they
reach P6.
4. Youth Music UK is working in partnership with the SAC to support the design and delivery of the YMI. Through 2004 - 2005
YMI funding, Youth Music UK has already established 10 exemplar projects across Scotland; focussing on developing rock/pop
and early years music opportunities for young people. Youth Music UK has since been advising the SAC on its new YMI open funding
scheme which is launches in March 2005.
