Action Zone mavericks awarded MBEs

Humber YMAZ's Delma Tomlin and Sarah Derbyshire from the North Yorkshire YMAZ have been recognised in the Queen's New Year's Honours List

Sarah Derbyshire (above) has been awarded an MBE for Services to Music. Sarah sits on the Management Board of tune-in, the North Yorkshire YMAZ, she joined the Music Department at Yorkshire Arts in 1984 and has worked as a freelance arts manager with University of York Music Department Concert Series and is the UK Executive Director of  the Yorkshire branch of Live Music Now, the largest music outreach scheme in the UK.

Sarah is thrilled with the award: "Obviously, this is a delight to me personally, and a great honour.  I am proud to play a part in helping to support the wealth of young musical talent in this country. Beyond that, it is great recognition of the value of the work we all do to widen access and participation in music, and the vital importance of music in all our lives - whatever our age or abilities".

Delma Tomlin

Delma Tomlin (above), the Director of Music4U - the Humber Region Action Zone, has been awarded an MBE for Services to the Arts. Delma, formed Music4U in 2001 and her organisation, the National Centre for Early Music based in York, co-ordinates the Zone. Music4U is one of the longest running Zones in the country and has provided music making opportunities for over 22,000 young people across the region.

Delma was delighted to receive this award: “It is a tremendous honour to have my contributions to the arts in Yorkshire recognised in this way. I have been privileged to work on some exciting and innovative projects over the past 25 years and would like to especially like to thank the teams of people who have worked and continue to work alongside me”.

Richard Stilgoe, Chair of Youth Music, said: "It is far too easy to think of organisations like Youth Music as belonging to London. Much of our very best work is done miles away in our 22 Youth Music Action Zones. One of these is Music4U and I am delighted that Delma Tomlin’s years of work there have been honoured in this way."
