A great summer of free music activities for kids

A great summer of free music activities for kids

The summer holidays are upon us and ReZonance, Thurrock's Youth Music Action Zone, are planning a whole host of exciting musical experiences for young people to take part in, which are all completely free.

There will be four regular groups meeting weekly, including a DJ masterclass (ages 11-18 from July 25), the Big Urban Sounds choir (ages 8-18 from July 26), a songwriting and performance skills group called Somethin’ 2 Say (ages 8-18 from July 27) and a fantastically lively group called Rhythm Alive, which will blend together tribal drumming, DJ mixing and movement (ages 8-18 from July 28). Everyone taking part in the weekly groups will be able to perform at a special show at the Thameside Theatre on September 6.

ReZonance is also taking over the Thameside Theatre for three days from August 2-4, for a special Rock School event. Rock School Live and Unleashed is a unique opportunity for 14-18 year olds to work on instrument playing skills, songwriting and composition, understanding of technical set-up and live performance. Participants will work with four, fully qualified music leaders and the workshop will accommodate those new to music as well as those who already play an instrument of any kind. There are only 30 places available so book early to avoid disappointment.

Notes to Editors:

  1. Youth Music funds and facilitates music-making for young people up to the age of 18, particularly those living in areas of social and economic need. It is a national charity set up in 1999 with National Lottery money provided through Arts Council England. By the end of 2006, Youth Music aims to have reached more than 3 million young people and their wider communities in a nationwide strategy to support youth music-making. More information is available at www.youthmusic.org.uk
  2. Since December 2000, Youth Music has invested £15m in setting up 20 Action Zones in areas of social and economic need across England. There are now a further two Zones in Wales. The aim is to provide music-making activities to young people who might not otherwise have the opportunity. Each Zone is made up of established organisations from the public, voluntary and private sector. Youth Music Action Zones cover all genres of music and deliver a wide range of activities including workshops, rehearsals, performances, one-to-one teaching and mentoring.
