BBC documentary follows El Sistema inspired UK project
The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic's 'In Harmony' music project is the subject of a specially comissioned documentary broadcast on Easter Monday.
Bute Street Symphony was filmed by BBC One North West’s Economics and Social Affairs Correspondent Jayne Barrett, over two months in Faith Primary School and the West Everton community, where the orchestra is delivering the two-year national pilot project, funded by the Department for Children Schools and Families.
In Harmony, chaired by the internationally renowned cellist Julian Lloyd Webber, is inspired by El Sistema in Venezuela which uses music, in the form of the symphony orchestra, to transform the lives of children in the most disadvantaged communities.
The Liverpool Phil’s In Harmony team, led by Artistic Director, Sally Anne Anderson, have been making music part of everyday life at Faith Primary School. The school has placed music at the heart of everything they do, helping to develop the children’s aspirations, self-esteem, concentration, creativity and teamwork, involving families and the whole community.
The daily music programme includes group instrumental tuition on violin, viola, cello and bass for all the children at Faith Primary School, who are aged 4-11 years. The entire school comes together every Friday at the Phil’s rehearsal venue, Liverpool Phil at the Friary, adjacent to the school, to play music together as the West Everton Children’s Orchestra.
In Harmony Liverpool is led by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, in partnership with Faith Primary School, West Everton Community Council, Liverpool Music Support Service, The Shewsy and the musicians, staff and students of Liverpool Hope University.
