Youth Music receives donation in memory of Nick Drake
Following a set of tribute gigs honouring the work of the highly acclaimed singer-songwriter Nick Drake, his estate have made a significant donation to Youth Music from funds generated through these events.
Huge thanks go out to Nick's sister Gabrielle who deemed Youth Music worthy to receive this support in memory of her much missed brother.
Nick Drake who tragically died at only 26 years of age was a talented multi-instrumentalist and singer, best known for his sombre yet haunting melodies and deeply affecting lyrics. He realeased 3 albums in total, with the first being issued in 1969. He suffered a lifelong battle with depression and insomnia and was reluctant to perform live or to be interviewed, which severely limited any commercial success during his lifetime
He did however attract a loyal group of fans including his producer Joe Boyd who have since championed his music. Joe was responsible for the recent series of tribute concerts named after his most popular album; Way to Blue. His music has been highly lauded since his death in 1976 and artists such as Kate Bush and Paul Weller amongst many others have cited him as a key influence.
The concerts, held last month, received widespread praise across the media and featured his original bassist Danny Thompson as well as contributions from Vashti Bunyan and Green Gartside of Scritti Politti.
Thanks again from all of us at Youth Music to the Estate of Nick Drake. This vital support will help us provide more opportunities for disadvantaged children and young people across the country.
