Salisbury International Arts Festival needs you!

Salisbury International Arts Festival needs you!

Posted: 05 February 2010

Are you aged 14- 18 and fancy the chance to perform at the Salisbury International Arts Festival?

Is so, then get involved with a project we're supporting that will give aspiring young musicians and songwriters a wealth of opportunities.

If you’re a songwriter who doesn’t play an instrument you could get your songs played by a band and experiment with new ideas and inspiration.

If you’re a musician but don’t write your own songs you could get to learn new skills or the chance to join a band and play other people’s work and if you're a DJ or a rapper, it could be the ideal opportunity to make new connections.

Colin Holton, director of Salisbury Live, is running the project for the festival and says, "it's very exciting to have been awarded funding from Youth Music and to be working with the festival and Wiltshire youth service partners. We're reaching out to a wide range of young people from across Wiltshire, and we will be led very much by what they want to do.”

Vikram Seth’s poem Earth will be used as an inspirational starting point, to tie in with this year’s Festival themes of chalk, earth and stone. The project will give you the chance to experiment and get creative with song writing and music making, whatever your experience or musical interests.

Participants will have to attend at least one intensive training week and both weekend courses, to be eligible to take part in a performance on 23 May 2010 as part of Salisbury Live on the opening festival weekend, and in final recording sessions in the week beginning 31 May 2010.

Young people will get the chance to record and showcase their work at a high-profile venue which will help to open up new audiences for Salisbury Live’s 15-plus events.

“The project will also provide training for emerging musicians to develop their community music skills and will offer special opportunities to work with recognised industry professionals,” adds Colin.

If you're in the Wiltshire area and want to get involved e-mail Gill Roberts at gill@salisburyfestival.co.uk or call 01722 335298
