George Caird

George Caird pursued a freelance career as an oboist after studying at the Royal Academy of Music and Cambridge University.

In 1993, he took over as Principal of Birmingham Conservatoire.  He was a member of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields, and is a founder-member of The Albion Ensemble.

George has adjudicated for BBC Young Musician of the Year, the YCAT awards and the Chamber Music Competition for Schools.

He is a board member of Performances Birmingham and since November 2005 has been Chair of the National Association of Youth Orchestras. He was elected Secretary-General of the Association of European Conservatoires in 2004.

In January 2006, he joined DCSF’s Music and Dance Scheme Advisory Group.  George has been involved in many areas of music education, and is a founding member of the British Double Reed Society.
