James Galway

Sir James Galway OBE is a Northern Ireland–born virtuoso flutist from Belfast, nicknamed "The Man With the Golden Flute".

He became one of the first flute players to establish an international career as a soloist. He still performs regularly and recently, collaborated on the Academy Award-winning soundtracks of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings film trilogy.

In June 2008, Galway was inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame along with Liza Minnelli and B. B. King.

In addition to this, he is a devoted campaigner for music education and hosts an annual course for aspiring young flautists at his home in Switzerland. He has also led a performance workshop with our very own National Children's Orchestra.

“To have Sir James Galway and Dame Evelyn Glennie, some of the biggest names in the world of music, endorse our charity is fantastic and a great privilege.

We are positive that they can reach out and help us to inspire many more young people to participate in music-making activities.”

Christina Coker OBE, Chief Executive, Youth Music
