Sing Up
What is Sing Up?
Sing Up launched in 2007 as the National Singing Programme, one of the principal recommendations of the Music Manifesto, supported by a £40 million Government investment over four years.
The programme, founded on the belief that singing has power to change lives and help build stronger communities, aims to put singing at the heart of every primary school-aged child’s life.
In March 2011 Sing Up was delighted to receive a further £4 million in funding from the Department for Education for 2011/12. Over the next year, Youth Music, Faber Music and The Sage Gateshead are working in partnership to:
• Sustain and develop the Sing Up resources including the website and Song Bank, and create new resources for working with children in transition from pre-school and to secondary school.
• Sustain and develop the provision of the Sing Up Training Programme and Sing Up Awards.
• Sustain and develop relationships with schools, enabling the sharing of best practice.
• Work with all key partners and providers to build on the strong local and sub-regional networks that have already been established.
History
From 2007 – 2011, Sing Up was championed by the Government’s National Singing Ambassador Howard Goodall and produced by a consortium led by Youth Music with advertising agency AMV-BBDO, music publishers Faber Music and The Sage Gateshead.
The combined expertise of these four organisations brought Sing Up to schools through a programme of workforce development, resources, funded activity and a public facing media campaign to highlight the role and contribution that singing can play in the school, the home and the community.
By 2011, over 95% of state primary schools had registered with Sing Up, over 55,000 people had taken part in Sing Up training and professional development, and the culture of singing in primary schools had dramatically changed for the better. The programme has been hailed by Government as ‘a triumph’ and attracted admiration from across the world.
