Portrait of a nation
Young people explore their cultural heritage in the European City of Culture
Youth Music has commissioned a project in support of the nationwide Portrait of a Nation programme. The unique campaign is being run during Liverpool's year-long reign as the European City of Culture 2008 by the Liverpool Culture Company, 17 other partner cities and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Portrait of a Nation is a year long programme of events and online activity in which young people in 17 cities across the UK explore their cultural heritage and what it means for their future. The project will also close the Year of Culture with a finale event bringing young people from the Cultural Cities Network together in Liverpool and including a final performance featuring young people from Liverpool and Merseyside.
More Music, the Lancashire Youth Music Action Zone is delivering Youth Music's Portrait of a Nation project by creating a 30-piece group of young musicians in Liverpool who will compose and perform music that will be played throughout the project. This will also include a 40-minute signature piece to be performed at the grand finale event on 1-2 December at St Georges Hall. The iconic Liverpool venue will act as a hub for the two day finale - a festival of performances, exhibitions, installations, films, workshops and debates exploring a sense of nation and what Britishness means for young people.
