Sound Stage

Sound Stage

In the winter of 2008 Metallica donated the proceeds from their gig at The O2 towards music making opportunities for young people in Greenwich. Together with The British Music Experience (BME), the Greenwich Music Service and Greenwich Theatre, Youth Music developed a programme of activity for fifty local participants to progress and achieve positive outcomes through high quality music making and mentoring.

Sound Stage is working with young people in challenging circumstances, though one-on-one and group support, to assist them in progressing both personally and creatively. The project brings together best practice from Youth Music Mentors and Youth Music Voltage, demonstrating how mentorship and volunteering can bring about positive personal change and raised aspirations for young people. Twelve identified participants from the three delivery partners have already received Music Leader Code of Practice training as well as specific training in music mentorship.

As a complementary project strand, a group of participants representing all partners will take part in ongoing participatory video training, gaining technical knowledge and tools by which to document, explore and reflect on their learning experiences in the Sound Stage project. This Sound Stage media component stands as an opportunity to pioneer an innovative model for multimedia learning which will include an online forum for peer support/mentoring and community linkages, via video diaries, blogs, photo stories and podcasts.
