We were pleased to meet a range of Welsh colleagues at the event and were especially pleased to welcome Alan Pugh, the Assembly Member who is responsible for Arts and Culture and Geraint Talfin-Davies, Chairman of the Arts Council of Wales. Feedback about the meeting shows that overall the audience was enthusiastic about the vivid and passionate descriptions of the work that has been achieved in Merthyr Tydfil and Ynys Mon with financial support from an anonymous donor.
I was especially pleased to be able to answer questions about Youth Music's role in Wales. We aim to work with Welsh music education colleagues in partnership in the out of school hours music making sector in localities where the need is greatest. I am especially keen that Youth Music can partner organisations which have on-the-ground knowledge and experience and to provide support that complements and enhances existing provision.
Our next steps include the creation of a short-term (one year) steering group which will comprise Welsh specialists and some Youth Music staff. Lord Rowlands, who generously agreed to host the evening at the Millennium Centre has agreed to help set up the group. Its objective will be to ensure that Youth Music listens, contributes and partners in a collaborative way and that we act in the best interests of musical activity in Wales.
