NYJC Jazz Workshops

The NYJC hosts a series of workshops for young musicians and music leaders

The National Youth Jazz Collective (NYJC) is a new and vibrant National Music Organisation, designed to support the educational and creative needs of the young jazz musician at a national and regional level.

Thanks to funding from Youth Music, the National Youth Jazz Collective, in partnership with Birmingham University is launching a series of weekend workshops based in Totnes, Torbay, Norwich, Rotherham, Huddersfield, and Kendal led by resident professional quartets comprising world class jazz musicians who are renowned members of the international jazz scene as well active educators on the UK Conservatoires' jazz programmes (teaching at Birmingham Conservatoire, Trinity College of Music, Royal Academy of Music, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Leeds College and Middlesex University).

Between October 2008 and March 2009 each of the 5 regions will host a series of 4 weekends, with each of the quartets leading workshops, master classes and seminars designed to inform and inspire the region's young jazz musicians and professional development sessions designed to support the local teachers and jazz musicians. In addition, each weekend will include a free public performance given by one of the professional quartets hosted in unlicensed, alcohol-free venues and designed to attract family audiences (A large majority of aspiring young jazz musicians are frequently prevented from going to hear their role models playing live, due to the gigs often being played in licensed premises). After NYJC's series of regional 20 projects, many of the young participants will go on to perform in Music For Youth's National Festival 2009.

NYJC's pool of tutors for these regional projects comprise Andy Bain,  Steve Berry, Tom Cawley, Alec Dankworth, Iain Dixon, Mark Donlon, Nic France, Dave Hassell, Mark Hodgson, Nikki Iles, Mark Lockheart, Liam Noble, Jeremy Price, Nick Smart, Tommy Smith, Martin Speake, Mike Walker, Steve Waterman and Steve Watts working along side NYJC's Artistic Director and Project Manager: Issie Barratt and Gilly Usborne.
