Expand horizons
Part of the creative process that goes into making music together, is the realization that many things are possible. For the children and young people we work with this can be about musical and artistic freedom – to hear and make music in styles that they haven’t come across before – and it can also be about the freedom to make new life choices.
We encourage young musicians working in very different styles to listen to each other’s music and to learn from each other. In our ‘Build a Band’ project, we bring together young musicians from different parts of the country with different musical tastes to write a song together which they then perform on the Leftfield Stage at the Glastonbury Festival.
Our Youth Music Action Zones reach young people from communities where aspiration and hope for the future can be very limited by their surroundings. We encourage them to see that with hard work and determination, they can achieve more than they ever thought possible – in their music making – but also helping them to see that they can extend that new-found confidence in their abilities to other areas of their lives too.
"It’s not that I’m going to be a pop star or anything, but since coming to the Zone I can see that I have choices. I don’t wanna just end up on benefits like the others, I can choose to do something else with my life."
